Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Systems Administrator to join our dynamic team. The primary responsibilities of this role include administration, implementation, maintenance, and overall management of critical systems and infrastructure including server, network, and storage resources; to support our high-performance computing (HPC) cluster and global business IT environments.

The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of system architectures, networking protocols, storage solutions, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and security of our infrastructure. This role will serve as a point of escalation to the Service Desk team, the R&D Computational Chemistry team, and other team members, by providing advanced support and expertise in maintaining the environment and resolving complex technical issues.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. System Administration: 
  • Design, manage, maintain, optimize, and troubleshoot the HPC environment, including hardware, software, drivers, storage, networking, cluster management, job scheduling, and container orchestration.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, develop and support HPC workflows/applications.
  • Deploy, manage, and optimize resources in a hybrid, multi cloud environment.
  • Deploy, manage, and maintain physical and virtual servers and related IT infrastructure, including initial build, configuration, and ongoing management.
  • Manage and maintain hyperconverged infrastructure and hypervisors.
  • Deploy, manage, and maintain globally distributed network equipment.
  • Manage accounts, profiles, service accounts, groups, server/file system access.
  • Install updates, patches, firmware, and general or specialized software.
  • Monitor performance, logs, identify issues, improve system stability and efficiency.
  • Implement and maintain best practices, including patch management, access control, and vulnerability assessment and mitigation.
  • Implement configuration changes, support and adhere to change processes.
  • Ensure system capacity, availability, performance, and security.
  • Manage backups, test backup/restore and restore capabilities, to ensure data integrity and availability.
  • Create efficiencies by automating frequent administrative tasks.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation and diagrams of system configurations, procedures, and policies.
  • Support ongoing projects and initiatives, as a technical resource.
     
  1. Service Delivery and Performance:
  • Monitor and manage service delivery to ensure compliance with Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and other performance metrics.
  • Define and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of corporate IT and HPC services.
  • Adherence to best practices, optimizing service delivery and efficiency.
  • Be accountable for meeting timelines and expectations.
  • Provide proactive recommendations for service improvements based on performance data and general stakeholder feedback.
     
  1. Support and Issue Resolution:
  • Serve as a point of escalation for the service desk team and peers, where advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic skills and other subject matter expertise is necessary.
  • Provide high-level technical support to end users and internal staff as required.
  • Collaborate and communicate with internal teams and vendor support services to resolve critical issues and failures, expeditiously.
  • Establish and maintain a knowledge base for recurring issues.
     
  1. Process Improvement and Innovation:
  • Continuously assess and improve IT administration processes and workflows to enhance efficiency and service quality. 
  • Implement best practices to ensure alignment with industry standards such as CIS. 
  • Remain updated with the latest technology trends and innovations, recommending and implementing new solutions to improve services. 
  • Lead initiatives to automate and optimize administrative operations for better productivity and enhanced efficiency.

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or relevant work experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in systems administration, with an extremely strong focus on Linux and Windows operating systems in a heterogenous environment.
Certifications:
  • Relevant certifications such as RHCE and AWS Certified Solutions Architect preferred, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator is a plus.
Technical Expertise:
  • RHEL, Ubuntu, and Debian Linux operating systems; Microsoft Windows
  • Deploying, managing, maintaining, monitoring, and optimizing a hybrid cloud (HPC) cluster environment, including underlying server, network, and storage infrastructure; cluster deployment tools including Warewulf and similar; container management orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes preferred; cluster monitoring and insights with Prometheus and Grafana.
  • In-depth experience with HPC job scheduling tools including Slurm, Torque, and PBS is required.
  • Familiarity with HPC hardware components and technologies, including GPU’s; understanding of queuing systems, knowledge of MPI parallel computing architectures.
  • Active Directory Domain Services, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, RDS, WSUS, MS CA Services, and File and Print services; MS Entra hybrid architectures, Exchange Server, MS SQL; other DBs such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, and Mongo are a plus
  • VMware vSphere, ESXI, KVM/QEMU virtualization platforms; familiarity with Nutanix a plus
  • Managing hyperconverged, compute, network, and storage infrastructure, strong experience with managing NFS, SMB storage protocols on enterprise class storage systems; out-of-band-management tools.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365, functional knowledge and understanding of hybrid Entra AD deployments; Entra Enterprise applications, Entra Identity and SAML/SSO a plus
  • In depth understanding of IP traffic flows, layer 2 switching, layer 3 routing, structured cabling, NAT, IP ports, layer 3 and layer 7 firewall ACL management, network protocols including TCPIP and related troubleshooting tools and utilities.; familiarity with Cisco networking devices preferred.
  • Scripting languages such as Bash, Python, and PowerShell
  • Experience in managing resources in AWS including resource deployment, networking, scaling, and optimization; familiarity with Azure a plus
  • Enterprise backup and recovery solutions including virtual machines, databases, and other application aware backup technologies.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong understanding of security best practices including server hardening, least privilege and zero trust principles, familiarity with CIS framework a plus. Strong ability to foster security awareness and remain security focused.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Exceptionally strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Must be extremely organized with unwavering professionalism and excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be available outside of business hours, for planned or unplanned activities; must be available to participate in on-call rotation, in support of 24x7 global operations.
  • Some travel is required, as necessary.
